TEMA STAUFFER: AMERICAN STILLS
PHOTOGRAPHS ON VIEW AT jen bekman October 12 - November 13, 2004
(additional work on view at the PUBLIC Avro|KO project space)

NEW YORK, NY - Tema Stauffer's New York solo debut of color photographs opens at jen bekman, 6 Spring Street New York, NY on Tuesday October 12, 2004 and remains on view through November 13, 2004. Additional work from Stauffer's American Stills series will be on view at the PUBLIC Avro|KO project space located around the corner, at 210 Elizabeth St, just north of Spring. St. An opening reception for the artist will be held in two parts on the evening of Tuesday, October 12: 6pm - 8pm @ jen bekman 8pm - 9.30pm @ PUBLIC Avro|KO.

Vince Aletti of the Village Voice praised her "spot on suburban landscapes" in jen bekman's inaugural exhibition in March, 2003. She has subsequently participated in five group shows at the gallery and has had multiple shows in the Minneapolis and Chicago, including a solo exhibition with the Minnesota Center for Photography in summer of 2004.

The American Stills series depicts Stauffer's nostalgic but unsentimental vision of the Midwest. As novelist Emily Carter writes: "She infuses it with the strange light of her particular way of seeing things." Stauffer focuses on the mundane and the often overlooked. The "it" Carter describes can be a run-of-the-mill gas station turned cinematic by its desolation coupled with a flaming orange dusk. Or a bright red bird feeder set against a supernaturally saturated blue sky. Or the glowing outlines cast by streetlights on a snowy path, creating a perfect frozen moment.

There will be 10 large-scale color photographs on view at jen bekman. Through the generosity of PUBLIC Avro|KO, we've been provided additional space adjacent to their restaurant and design studios where 4 additional pieces will be on view there for the duration of the exhibition.
